Freeze

A squirrel runs across the roof. We make eye contact when I return from a walk. The squirrel appeared to be running to some other destination. Then snow fell and tracks appeared. That scurrying I heard was him (them) nearly indoors. If I were a squirrel, I'd chill here where it's cozy and warm. It (they) have to go. The critter catcher agrees. This time of year it's more humane to break their necks, he says. They will die quickly, and then freeze. Otherwise they would freeze while still alive. The trap snaps. The critter catcher will remove it tomorrow.
